Argument-Driven Inquiry (ADI) is an instructional model developed to give a central place to argumentation while engaging students in scientific practices within introductory laboratory courses. Instead of completing a single experiment every week, students engage with targeted concepts over a period of three weeks. Laboratory activities incorporate scientific practices such as planning investigations, visualizing data, and crafting arguments as well as scientific writing and peer-review. The workshop will walk through the weekly structure of laboratory activities within ADI using student work as examples. Participants will use mock data to develop a tentative argument and engage in an argumentation session. We will also work through the group peer-review process using student generated lab reports. The workshop leaders have extensive experience with laboratory transformation as well as professional development on using ADI in the laboratory.
