As teaching social justice becomes more common and a more accepted part of our job description, science teachers may be left without tools for this necessary component. We will explore what STEM education for social justice can be, including the necessity of intentionally including identity, equity, and justice in our classrooms. We will share work we do with our students to explore topics of racism and sexism in chemistry as a jumping-off point for further class discussions. This includes examining data and media, some classroom activities, and discussions to further students’ synthesis of ideas, and ultimately, their understanding of who does science and how it affects others. Attendees can expect to gain clearer motivation, tools for overcoming challenges, ideas to try in their own educational settings, and a network of educators with whom to continue this work.
