A current key sustainability challenge is that chemists are not trained how to address hazards when designing chemical products. Specifically, chemists lack training in toxicology: the understanding of what makes a molecule hazardous to human health and the environment. To address this knowledge gap, Beyond Benign – a non-profit dedicated to universal green chemistry education – has designed and released an open-access Toxicology for Chemists curriculum. The curriculum has been developed by a group of key experts, including professional toxicologists and chemists from across industry, academia, and government. The Toxicology for Chemists curriculum contains lectures, supplementary material, and additional resources to allow educators and current and future scientists to understand and practice chemistry that is safe and responsible for society.

The goal of this workshop is to support and guide educators through different ways to use and integrate the Toxicology for Chemists curriculum in their own courses. The workshop will be led by Beyond Benign in conjunction with three of our Toxicology for Chemists Fellows who each have firsthand experience integrating the curriculum into their own courses. We will first provide an overview of the Toxicology for Chemists curriculum and detailed examples of flexible ways to use the modules and their content. The remainder of the workshop is interactive and is designed to help educators “live brainstorm” how they can integrate these materials into their own courses. Opportunities for participants include future support and guidance from the Toxicology for Chemists education community.
